Airport Security Case Studies

ADT has completed a series of installations providing complex solutions to major airports.  Below are two examples, for more information please contact the number above.

John Lennon

Liverpool John Lennon Airport - Total Security & Protection

ADT installed a vital new security system at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The system incorporates CCTV cameras, infrared fence protection and an update of the Airport's access control system, offering total protection across the airport, including terminal buildings and car parks.

The sheer increase in infrastructure at the Airport and the volume of passenger throughput, estimated at 3.2 million, prompted a complete upgrade and expansion of their security systems.

ADT studied the airport's specification and was able to provide a CCTV system which exactly fitted their needs, updating and expanding the original system and making the change from analogue to a 24-hour digital system.

We were also contracted to maintain and update the access control system to authorise staff to access secured zones. This was for both air-side areas, to be accessed only by aircraft employees, and for land-side zones, used by catering and retail staff.

The access system links into the CCTV system, triggering response alarms and altering cameras to focus on areas attracting attention from unwanted guests.

The complete security system is a cost-effective solution that is user friendly, yet sophisticated and provides protection against crime and associated risks.

Birmingham Airport

Birmingham International Airport

Overview
The Access Control solution at Birmingham International Airport (BHX) is based on the market leading AC2000 solution for airport terminals from Tyco’s CEM Systems.

The nature of BHX, as with most airports, is that passenger routes are continuously being redefined. Arriving passengers are guided from the aircraft air-bridge to the arrivals hall, via baggage reclaim and passport control (for international passengers), whereas departing passengers are guided from the departures lounge to the gate, and onto the same air-bridge once the arriving passengers and crew have vacated the area.

The method of controlling these passenger routes is through the CEM controlled doors, which the airport refers to as ‘Valves’. The operators in the Security Control Room define the routes that the passengers will take and then each valve is opened or closed to realize the specific route. AT BHX, the requirement was for an automated method of creating the valve routes, using a touch screen, incorporating a large mimic panel displaying which routes were open and closed.

Traditionally these systems are heavily bespoke and consequently expensive, furthermore they are difficult to maintain and amend as airports change and expand.

The Solution
ADT Fire & Security installed an Integrated System, based on Delta Controls’ BACnet/IP product to interface with the CEM Systems Door Controllers. The AC2000 system sends commands to initialise the doors into passenger mode and receives information in return indicating the open/close status of each door.

The Integrated System connects to a dual screen PC in the Security Control Room via a BACnet/IP network. One screen is the Valve Configuration touch screen that allows operators to configure the valve routes, and the second screen is a wall mounted 42” Plasma, which shows the floor plan and colour coded routes. Additionally the large plasma is configured to show a continuous live news feed from BBC News24 in a small TV window.

ADTs innovative solution uses industry standard products based on BACnet products which allowed an extremely flexible and easy to commission design to be implemented quickly and efficiently.

Washington Dulles International Airport

ADT designed, installed and maintain of all Washington Dulles International Airport security systems including access control, CCTV, digital recording and perimeter security.  Major equipment includes Software House access control, American Dynamics CCTV and Loronix digital recording.

Since receiving the maintenance contract for the electronic security systems at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority facilities at Dulles and Reagan National airports, ADT has added more than 250 card readers and field panels to the access control system, in addition to providing all preventive and corrective maintenance on the existing equipment.

ADT has also provided access control, CCTV, digital recording, and other security equipment as a subcontractor to prime construction and electrical contractors at Washington Dulles.
