No school is immune to the threat of arson. It accounts for 75% of all causes of fire in schools and according to the Local Government Association over 2,000 schools in the UK are damaged by fire every year. Besides the potential loss of life, injuries and substantial property damage, fire can cause severe disruption for schools, colleges and universities for a long time after the fire itself has been extinguished.

With schools that are maintained by a local education authority, responsibility for fire safety is usually shared between the authority, the governing body and the headteacher. Between them, they must ensure that fire precautions comply with all relevant health and safety legislation.

ADT has prepared a guide and fire risk assessment safety checklist to help you understand and comply with the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005.

This guide is for all employers, head teachers, governors, vice-chancellors, occupiers and owners of premises where the main use, part of, or the entire building is for educational purposes. This is with the exception of residential premises such as university halls of residence and boarding schools with sleeping accommodation.
