Top tips to keep your home safe in the winter

Did you know that a burglary occurs every 20 seconds in the UK. With the winter months now upon us and nights drawing in early this gives burglars extra protection against being seen.

ADT has compiled 10 tips to help protect your property in the winter months.

Never leave garages or sheds unlocked - not only do you risk losing your property but you are also supplying the burglar with the tools to break into your house
Fit security lighting on the front and back of the house
Set some internal lights on timer switches
Fit a security chain to the front door
Fit deadlocks to all outside doors (these require a key to open them from the inside as well as the outside) and make sure the deadlock key isn’t kept in an obvious place.
Close and lock your doors and windows - even if you are only going out for a short time
Never leave door keys under a doormat or plant pot outside
Don't leave valuables in sight through windows where burglars can see them
Use a security marker pen to mark your postcode on your property - this will enable the police to return any stolen property to you. Make an inventory and keep the list in a safe place
If you have a monitored home security system, make sure it is working properly and remember to set it. If you do not have a monitored alarm, consider having one installed because they are an effective deterrent.
