Dogs and cats aren’t just pets; they’re part of the family. And as such, we all want to keep our four-legged family members safe – especially when they’re home alone. Below we’ve put together some handy tips on leaving your pets home alone, to keep them safe and you worry-free. 

Keep things tidy
Dogs and cats are inquisitive by nature and the most unexpected thing can pique their interest. That’s why it’s important to tidy away anything that could cause them harm if they happened to find it. For example, lose cables, food they can’t eat, or cleaning products. 

Install indoor cameras
Indoor cameras are a great way to keep an eye on your pets when you’re not home, meaning they still get the run of the house, while you still get peace of mind. If you can, keep them locked downstairs, to avoid accidents on the stairs.

Use a crate
This is mainly a consideration for dogs, however, it’s also good to offer your cat their own space to retreat to. Most dogs actually enjoy being in a crate; it’s a safe space and they settle well in them – even during the night. Although if you’re using one for the first time, be sure to gently introduce it to your dog over a period of time before you leave them alone.

Think of playtime
If you were left alone with nothing to do all day, you’d likely get bored – and pets are no different. Keep them entertained (and out of trouble) by leaving a selection of dog- or cat-friendly toys, or by playing some gentle background music or the radio. There’s even Dog TV! 

Get a sitter
Again, this one mainly concerns dogs, as they’re particularly socialable animals and don’t like to be left alone for long periods of time. So, if you find you’re suddenly really busy and there’s no-one home for most of the day, it could be an idea to get a dog sitter to give your furry friend some company. 

Get your pet microchipped
Since 2016, it’s now a legal requirement for all dog owners – and more recently cat owners – to have their pets microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old. Not only does this help identify them if they escape or are stolen, but it ensures their quick return to you once they’re found. 

Microchips help keep your pets safe inside and outside the home. And when you take your dog out, be sure to never leave them unattended outside shops or by water – and remain vigilant for any hazards.  

Install fire and carbon monoxide alarms
